Among several of Professor Elsa Valdez’ research and teaching interests are:  sociology of education, social inequality, the family, and race and ethnic relations.  Professor Valdez’ most recent publications include an analysis of minority women’s experiences in sociology graduate programs, and Latina adolescent mothers.  She is also involved in several local community partnerships which focus on educational issues, and community empowerment.  Dr. Valdez has been on the Board of Trustees for the San Bernardino City Unified School District since 1997.  The SBCUSD is the sixth largest school district in the state of California.  In 2004 and 2005, Professor Valdez  was  recognized for her exemplary work in the community as well for her contributions to the field of education by Libreria del Pueblo and the San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee Luncheon Club.
